Title: Compass: Creating Exceptional Organizations: A Leader's Guide
Author: William F. Brandt, Jr.
Compass: Creating Exceptional Organizations: A Leader's Guide by William F. Brandt, Jr. is much more than just a guide for leaders in business, be they leaders of for profit or not for profit organizations. The guide could also be used by entrepreneurs starting a business, small business owners and even be used by individuals seeking to improve their success in life.
What struck me most about this book was the universality of the principals and the ways of sustainable growth among the pages of this easy to read book.
If you are someone who has come to know you and or your business needs to change to survive, Brandt understands your problem when he writes, “Everyone believes in change, provided it happens to someone else. Few of us are willing to change our own behavior, and the higher we are in the organization’s hierarchy, the less we are willing to do so.”
But change for the sake of change is not what this book is about. It is about demanding excellence from yourself and your business. Can you really separate the two?
The author proposes behavior that goes beyond economic profits to include other goals that would make you proud of yourself and your business.
This book is about respect and the integrity you need to gain respect.
Brandt writes, “This book postulates a new, more powerful paradigm, one that advocates the simultaneous pursuit of both ‘self-interest and ‘concern for others.’”
I strongly recommend this book to those in business who wish to enhance their companies, be they large or small, and anyone who wants to enhance the quality of their own life.
