Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Veterans Remembered

Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Veterans Remembered

LONG LAKE--On November 2nd a contingent from the Col. George L. Willard Camp 154, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) had its monthly meeting in Long Lake and went on to re-dedicate and dedicate two veterans’ gravestones in Long Lake and Blue Mountain Lake, NY respectfully. This unit is headquartered in Albany, NY but is responsible for the eastern half of the Adirondacks to the Canadian border.
After its meeting and lunch the group teamed up with the Long Lake’s Hamilton Post 650 of the American Legion, who provided a firing squad for the event. Cdr. Jim Bateman, USN (Ret.) commanded the Legion’s firing squad. The first stop was at the Long Lake cemetery where a new headstone for Pvt., Alba Cole, Co. F, 192nd New York Volunteer Infantry was re-dedicated. The event included, remarks by the Camp Commander, Brian Castler, an invocation by the Camp’s Chaplin, for the event, James King, firing of three rifle volleys by the American Legion and taps.
The two groups then moved on to Blue Mountain Lake cemetery where the ceremony was repeated, this time for Sgt., Seth Pierce, Co. A, 169th New York Volunteer Infantry. It is 108 years since Pierce’s death and the first time his gave has had a maker. After the Civil War both Cole and Pierce were members of the Long Lake Post 531, Grand Army of the Republic. It is the duty of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to “keep green” the memory of these Civil War Veterans. You may find more information on the Col. George L. Willard Camp’s activities at: www.glwillard154.org.
